Opening Sequences that helped our film sequence

When we decided that our film sequence would involve somebody being followed. We decided it would be a good idea to do some research about films which involved stalkers. Here are some we looked at:

Play misty for me
Cape fear
Fatal attraction
Scream (1996)
Taxi driver (1976)
The fan
Fear
The hand that rocks the cradle

The most important elements in these films are that they all create suspense, tension and excitement. These are conventions of a thriller.
A thriller needs to have a main character so that the audience can emphasise with one person on a personal level, (the girl being followed). The main character normally finds themselves in danger and this creates excitement for the audience. In many thrillers the protagonist ends up being isolated and having to face danger on their own. You have to be able to see the feelings of the character, their sense of being alone and that they are at risk of something bad happening. In thrillers the main character will often be at risk of death because they will be in the hands of the antagonist (the stalker in our film). The important thing is to get the viewer to feel that the problems the protagonist encounters could actually happen to them and to be able to install a sense of fear, dread and worry into the audience.

Another important aspect of the thriller genre is to make sure that the antagonist always has power over the protagonist. This helps get the audience on the protagonists side because they are alone and have no control. The antagonist always has to be one step ahead of the protagonist. For example in our film sequence, the 'stalker' had power of the girl because he stole her personal belongings and her key so he was able to break into the house before she got there. Our aim was that it would create excitement for the audience because they want to find out what happens when the girl goes into the house.
